LITTLE KIDS- BIG SMILES PRESCHOOL ORAL HEALTH PROGRAM
Little Kids- Big Smiles Preschool Oral Health Program is an Oral Health Initiative of IDID Institute Corp. This program was developed to introduce oral health and oral hygiene as a curriculum component of the overall preschool curriculum in several urban preschools in the Indianapolis community. Power Point presentations, oral hygiene instructions, interactive games, fluoride varnish applications and oral screenings will occur throughout each semester during the year. A dentist, and/ or dental hygienist will conduct each session. Colgate, Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Program provides the dental van for oral screening by local dentists, as they have in the past for our organization. Children who attend the aftercare program also have a similar curriculum for age groups 5-8 and 10-16. Materials are produced in English and Spanish and are sent home with the parents for every session. We expect that the impact on childrenʼs oral health will be significant. The repeated and increased exposure to oral hygiene will give these children a jumpstart in learning the importance
of good oral and over all health. These students will be directed to dental facilities for oral treatment, and will be closely monitored for successful dental outcomes. The population of children served will be primarily from low income families. The children are predominantly African-American and Latino-American. Specific outcomes include earlier, and more direct and consistent exposure to oral healthcare for an at-risk population of youth. Better personal oral hygiene, prevention of decay, and greater exposure to dentistry as a career option are other expected outcomes of this project. Immediate increase to access to care issues for these families will be a significant outcome. This project can be duplicated in Headstart Programs and Preschools across the nation to increase access to care and help eliminate disparities in healthcare.
